Scheduled to open in January 2021, KAI Kirishima is a hot spring ryokan in southern Japan. Its mountainside location offers every room a clear view of Sakurajima, an active volcano situated south of the grounds. The scenic pleasures extend to the baths, located in a field of silvergrass that can be accessed by monorail from the ryokan.

Every room offers breathtaking views of Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima, which stands in the middle of the bay. All rooms are KAI Signature Rooms with headboards featuring a stylish, exhilarating painting with a stucco-like texture, created with clays made from the volcanic white soil that composes much of the area's topography.

Wrapping cloth

In Japan, objects are traditionally carried around in a makeshift bag formed from a sheet of cloth, known as furoshiki. Guests are invited to use these cloths to carry their belongings around the premises.

Dining

Kirishima is located in Kagoshima Prefecture, which is rich in culinary ingredients. Guests are served meals featuring seasonal seafood, as well as flavorsome vegetables and meat that hail from the region's unique white soil highlands.

Dinners feature creative dishes prepared with seasonal local ingredients, some of which are served on ornately crafted containers.

Hot spring

A short monorail trip from the ryokan will take guests to a bathhouse that sits in the middle of a vast field of silvergrass. Supplied by waters from deep within the Kirishima Mountains, the facility offers a cavernous indoor bath and an outdoor bath that looks out over the area's stunning scenery.

Sightseeing

Kirishima Jingu

This 6th century shrine—one of the most sacred sites in southern Japan—is dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, a mythical hero. The premises are decorated with an assortment of flowers and trees that sport beautiful colors year-round. Nearby are the Seven Wonders of Kirishima and the ruins of a medieval shrine.

    Located at an altitude of 670 meters within Kirishima Kinkowan National Park, this leisure site includes a souvenir shop for purchasing local delicacies. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima from a wide observatory deck, and there are many activities offered for children.

  • Takachiho Farm

    This farm tourism site at the foot of the Kirishima Mountains offers visitors a chance to interact with cows, horses, and sheep. Admission is free, and activities include milking, as well as sausage and butter making.

    Kirishima Open-Air Museum

    Sculptures made of a variety of materials are exhibited at this sprawling outdoor museum, located in a natural setting west of the Kirishima Mountains. Visitors are encouraged to touch, sit on, and interact with the displays, which incorporate the natural terrain and vegetation along the museum's two-kilometer course.
